Report:
We were already running behind to get out of Sussex County. We had decided to rent a midsize U-Haul van to stock up with a variety of Dogfish Head brews for our around the world trip. In the event we encounter some less desirable foreign beers, weve decided to keep a big stash in the Pilatus cargo area on a just in case basis.
Once the beer was loaded into our newly outfitted Pilatus, we did our preflight check and noticed we were having some serious issues with the new panel based KLN90B GPS. Furthermore, and most serious of all
we were unable to drag the GPS to monitor #2. After loosing over an hour on the ground troubleshooting we eventually took off in the older model Pilatus with working GPS.
Upon takeoff from KGED, our flight plan had us heading directly over Manhattan, and then heading through Upstate New York en route to Montreal. The afternoon flight was mostly uneventful, skies were clear at our cruising altitude of FL290 and we had the help of some very strong tailwinds that remained quite steady around 60 knots, and pushed our groundspeed to 310. Peaking through the clouds below, we caught a view of Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, a Royal Caribbean ship, and as we turned to head north we caught just a big of KLGA. We started our decent into CYUL a bit late, and opted to make a large descending circle to the east before heading into Runway 29R. We broke through some cloud cover at 4,000 feet to be greeted by a crisp day with a modest 4 knot wind. Having practiced my landing skills in Sussex County, and with the help of calmer winds, I set the trusty Pilatus down dead on the center line and right at the threshold.
Having been one of the few approaches I have shot in the last 7+ years, it has become evident that once youve caught the flying bug, it never really disappears
it might hibernate for a bit, but the spell remains.
Ill be calling up my internet friend, Frank while here in Montreal, who has a few beer recommendations from the brewery, Unibroue
which I keep referring to as Unibrow in my head. So, here we are in Montreal, a very photogenic city with a bad ass music scene... and some respectable local brews; we are specifically searching out Trois Pistoles which its whopping 9% ABV! Well also be looking to locate Franks Unibroue recommendations: La Blanche de Chambly and La Fin du Monde. Word has it Steven Caicedo now inhabits these parts, so a proper clubnight with some classic Caicedo smooveness is in order too. See you on the next leg as we head East to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
